7:00 p.m. Pellissippi State: Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra Concert
The Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Tom Lundberg, will perform a concert featuring jazz pianist Bill Carrothers. An acclaimed educator, performer, and recording artist, Carrothers has worked with many notable artists including Dave Douglas, Gary Peacock, and Bill Stewart. He currently serves on the faculty of Lawrence University in Wisconsin.

7:30 p.m. Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven's "Eroica" (Performance 1 of 2)
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, “Eroica” or “Heroic” will resound in the concert hall, celebrating his 250th year. “Eroica” is the first time Beethoven pushes the boundaries of the symphonic form, as the first two symphonies were more traditional and classical – similar to Haydn & Mozart. Two underrepresented but essential American composers comprise the first half of the program. George Walker was the first African American to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1996. His searingly emotional elegy, “Lyric for Strings,” will open the program, followed by Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Knoxville audiences will remember violinist Bella Hristova from her 2017 Knoxville performance. Bella Hristova is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including a 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grant and First Prize in the 2009 Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

Arcomusical is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to spread the joy of the Afro-Brazilian musical bow known as the berimbau through the development of an innovative, excellent musical repertoire. Although the berimbau is well-known in Brazil, most people in the United States are not familiar with its elegant simplicity. Arcomusical is changing that landscape. Their concert will feature music composed both by, and specifically for, their ensemble.

Prokofiev’s simple, charming, magical tale of Peter and the Wolf has introduced countless young ears to the instruments of the orchestra and to wonders of classical music. Revisit that childlike wonder that still lives inside us all with a program of fairy tales and legends, featuring Peter and other beloved characters from our favorite bedtime stories. Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite is a pristine gem, comprising five vignettes inspired by stories including Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast and more. Stravinsky’s delightful, refreshing Pulcinella Suite, about the antics of a tragicomic clown-like character and all his friends, along with Sibelius’ melancholy Valse triste. Based in Ohio, Altered Sound Duo is committed to promoting contemporary repertoire for saxophone and percussion. This spring they will appear as ensemble-in-residence at the inaugural Music in Bloom Festival in Bloomington, Indiana.

The University of Kentucky Faculty Jazztet includes Professor Miles Osland (woodwinds), Bradley Kerns (trombone), Raleigh Dailey (piano), Danny Cecil (bass), and Paul Deatherage (drums). The jazztet's music is an update of the jazz tradition with influences ranging from jazz fusion to free improvisation. The group plays original music, as well as reinventions of classic jazz material.

The AA5 winter series concludes with the premier performance of the 4th annual week-end long Women in Jazz Jam Festival, coordinated by Kelle Jolly. The Women in Jazz Jam Festival Band is a collective lead by women musicians who perform with the love of jazz in their hearts and the joy of life on their faces. Featured in the group are some of Knoxville’s local favorites, as well as, rising stars. Their performance will include music written by and made famous by women performers, as well as some original music.

Winner of the Simcha Prize at the 2017 International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam, Big Galut(e) has been described as ‘soulful and unselfconsciously poignant,’ ‘jubilant,’ ‘a real treat for open minds,’ and ‘a serious band with lousy American humor.’ The musicianship of clarinetist Robin Seletsky, violinist Sasha Margolis, lutist Michael Leopold, keyboardist and percussionist Mark Rubinstein, and double bassist Richard Sosinsky combine for a fascinating repertoire that includes Klezmer originals and new twists on old tunes; classical pieces by Mahler, Musorgsky, Brahms, Shostakovich, Salomone Rossi, and Kurt Weill; tangos from Buenos Aires and Broadway; comical songs; and much more.
