7:30 p.m. UT School of Music & the Knoxville Jewish Day School Present: Itzhak Perlman
World-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman performs a special concert alongside pianist Rohan DeSilva at the historic Tennessee Theatre as a continuation of the highly-acclaimed community event Violins of Hope, which was held in Knoxville in January 2019. This performance will be the capstone event of the Knoxville Violins of Hope experience. We hope you'll join us for an amazing evening in Knoxville with Mr. Perlman.

This concert is the finale to the SCOUT-sponsored, 24-hour composition challenge! In this challenge, composers worked to write for a randomly selected set of players for the ensemble sizes they chose. After 24 hours, the composers gave their completed work to the performers to rehearse and play on this concert. Come join us as we watch the hard work put into such a short time! In celebration of 250 years since Beethoven's birth in 1770, pianist David Brunell will present a concert exploring three of Beethoven's greatest piano sonatas, including one from each of his three musical periods: the Pathétique, Op. 13, the Waldstein, Op. 53, and his penultimate sonata, the great Op. 110. Assisted by a PowerPoint presentation, Brunell will not only perform, but will also examine how each sonata communicates so powerfully and richly exemplifies Beethoven's continually evolving and compelling style.

Pianist Tianxu An, from Beijing, China, is a sought-after young pianist in China, Russia and the United States. Highlights of his 2019–20 season include performances with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev in St.Petersburg, and with the China Philharmonic Orchestra under Xia Xiaotang as part of the International Mariinsky Far East Festival, solo recitals at the Mariinsky Theatre and Shanghai Grand Theater, and a concert with the China NCPA Orchestra under Jia Lü at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, among many others.

Art, light, and friendship tell the story of celebrated African-American painter Beauford Delaney, who left the segregated South for the heady freedom of the Harlem Renaissance and Bohemian Paris. Famous singers, actors, writers, and artists adored him, Foremost among them his ‘spiritual son,’ writer James Baldwin, who credits his beloved mentor with teaching him how to live, learn, and see. This genial soul, frequently suicidal, was plagued by poverty and schizophrenic voices. Art became his lifeline, and he filled hundreds of bright canvases with joy and hope. Writer Henry Miller called them ‘canticles to the sun.’ Delaney’s journey out of darkness, ‘the misery,’ he called it, ‘of which the jewel of life is formed,’ is a splendid testament to the courage and resilience of a gifted man who found in the mystical marriage of color and shape the healing grace of love.
