In celebration of 250 years since Beethoven's birth in 1770, pianist David Brunell will present a concert exploring three of Beethoven's greatest piano sonatas, including one from each of his three musical periods: the Pathétique, Op. 13, the Waldstein, Op. 53, and his penultimate sonata, the great Op. 110. Assisted by a PowerPoint presentation, Brunell will not only perform, but will also examine how each sonata communicates so powerfully and richly exemplifies Beethoven's continually evolving and compelling style.

Sherman Irby is the lead alto saxophonist and a principal composer/arranger for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. He has served in this role since 2005 and has contributed dozens of works to the Orchestra's vast library. Pianist Tianxu An, from Beijing, China, is a sought-after young pianist in China, Russia and the United States. Highlights of his 2019–20 season include performances with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev in St.Petersburg, and with the China Philharmonic Orchestra under Xia Xiaotang as part of the International Mariinsky Far East Festival, solo recitals at the Mariinsky Theatre and Shanghai Grand Theater, and a concert with the China NCPA Orchestra under Jia Lü at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, among many others.

The Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Tom Lundberg, will perform a concert featuring jazz pianist Bill Carrothers. An acclaimed educator, performer, and recording artist, Carrothers has worked with many notable artists including Dave Douglas, Gary Peacock, and Bill Stewart. He currently serves on the faculty of Lawrence University in Wisconsin.

7:30 p.m. Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven's "Eroica" (Performance 1 of 2)
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, “Eroica” or “Heroic” will resound in the concert hall, celebrating his 250th year. “Eroica” is the first time Beethoven pushes the boundaries of the symphonic form, as the first two symphonies were more traditional and classical – similar to Haydn & Mozart. Two underrepresented but essential American composers comprise the first half of the program. George Walker was the first African American to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1996. His searingly emotional elegy, “Lyric for Strings,” will open the program, followed by Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Knoxville audiences will remember violinist Bella Hristova from her 2017 Knoxville performance. Bella Hristova is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including a 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grant and First Prize in the 2009 Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

6:00 p.m. Alive After Five with Crawlspace (LINK)
Crawlspace is the most recent project of veteran Blues rocker and harmonica wizard, Michael “Crawdaddy” Crawley, a mainstay of the Knoxville music scene for more than two decades, as the leader of Crawdaddy and The Macdaddies and also playing with International Blues Challenge semi-finalists, Jenna & Her Cool Friends. After Jenna Jefferson retired from the music scene to spend more time with her family, Crawley assembled a new group with Cool Friends members and some others, and Crawlspace was born. With Kevin Redding on drums, Ben Maney and Stevie Jones on keyboards, Bob Goodson on guitar, Aram Takvoryan on bass, and Michael Crawley on harmonica and vocals, there is enough talent and synergy that one might say the sky is the limit for Crawlspace! Food available from Rocky’s Jamaica Sunrise.

The Knoxville Symphony opens its 84th season by taking to the stars, in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing. Audiences will instantly recognize Johann Strauss, Jr.'s 'On The Beautiful Blue Danube' from the film “2001: A Space Odyssey” and Debussy’s 'Clair de lune,' plus contemporary composer Missy Mazzoli’s “These Worlds in Us,” inspired by James Tate’s poem, “The Lost Pilot.” Gustav Holst's iconic, celestial showpiece, "The Planets", will include visual accompaniment featuring spectacular NASA media and original animations by visual artist Adrian Wyard cued live to follow the evening's performance.
