Robyn James (she/her/hers) is a classically-trained musician and award-winning educator from Fayetteville, North Carolina. Her main instruments are viola, violin, and piano and she sings any time she’s given the opportunity. She is the founder of Robyn James Ensembles, a string group providing music for corporate meetings, parties, weddings, and other events. The group, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2024, has been featured on WeddingWire, The Knot, and Zola. Robyn has previously performed with the Knoxville Symphony, Oak Ridge Symphony, Oak Ridge Philharmonia, and Symphony of the Mountains.

Robyn holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro and a Master of Music in Viola Performance from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville. She has been an adjunct professor at Pellissippi State Community College since Fall 2007, where she has taught applied viola, applied violin, Introduction to Music (Music Appreciation), and Fundamentals of Music. Robyn also taught Music Appreciation and String Techniques (methods) at Lincoln Memorial University for several semesters. She maintains a small private studio in which she instructs students age six and up in music theory, viola, and violin.

Robyn has won two awards during her time at Pellissippi State: Outstanding Adjunct Faculty for the 2015-2016 academic year (selected by peer faculty and staff) and the Adjunct Appreciation Award for the 2020-2021 academic year (selected by Faculty Senate). She was also accepted as a participant in the first Teaching Full Circle Cohort titled “Creating Inclusive and Responsive Classrooms for Learning Equity” for the Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 semesters, and as a co-facilitator/facilitator for Cohorts 3 and 4. She joined Pellissippi’s Faculty Senate as an adjunct representative in July 2024 and is also serving her second 3-year term as Pellissippi State Caucus Chair for United Campus Workers, a higher education union. Her non-music hobbies include painting her nails, going down Wikipedia rabbit holes, all things cat-related, and napping.

I’ve had the privilege of playing with Robyn multiple times, on both large and small stages. Her talent is obvious, and she makes a significant contribution to every event she is a part of. Her string trio also provided the music for our wedding ceremony, which was fantastic.
