7:30 p.m. UT School of Music & the Knoxville Jewish Day School Present: Itzhak Perlman
World-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman performs a special concert alongside pianist Rohan DeSilva at the historic Tennessee Theatre as a continuation of the highly-acclaimed community event Violins of Hope, which was held in Knoxville in January 2019. This performance will be the capstone event of the Knoxville Violins of Hope experience. We hope you'll join us for an amazing evening in Knoxville with Mr. Perlman.

The Maryville College-Community Concert Band (MC3Band) serves a dual purpose: to provide a means of artistic expression for all its members (community, faculty, staff, and students) within the wind band medium, and to provide Maryville students with the opportunity to perform and learn within a large ensemble setting.

Sofya Gulyak's recital programs are frequently reviewed in superlatives, and her concerto appearances with major orchestras are noted in glowing terms by the world's music press. The Maryville College Concert Choir, directed by Stacey Wilner, will perform selections from its upcoming Scotland tour in May 2020. This concert will serve as a fundraiser for the choir tour.

Abbie Conant is former Principal Trombone of the Munich Philharmonic and Professor of Trombone at the Staatliche Hochschule fuer Musik in Trossingen, Germany. Her experiences with egregious sexism in the Munich Philharmonic inspired Malcom Gladwell's book Blink and comprise its final chapter. Her recital performance at UT is a fitting marker of Women's History Month and is free and open to the public.

The AA5 spring series begins with the premier performance of the 5th annual week-end long Women in Jazz Jam Festival, coordinated by Kelle Jolly. The Women in Jazz Jam Festival Band is a marvelous ensemble lead by women musicians who perform with the love of jazz in their hearts and the joy of life on their faces. Featured in the group are some of Knoxville’s local favorites as well as some rising stars. Pianist Tianxu An, from Beijing, China, is a sought-after young pianist in China, Russia and the United States. Highlights of his 2019–20 season include performances with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev in St.Petersburg, and with the China Philharmonic Orchestra under Xia Xiaotang as part of the International Mariinsky Far East Festival, solo recitals at the Mariinsky Theatre and Shanghai Grand Theater, and a concert with the China NCPA Orchestra under Jia Lü at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, among many others.

7:30 p.m. Marble City Opera: Shadowlight (LINK) Performance 1 of 2 
Art, light, and friendship tell the story of celebrated African-American painter Beauford Delaney, who left the segregated South for the heady freedom of the Harlem Renaissance and Bohemian Paris. Famous singers, actors, writers, and artists adored him, Foremost among them his ‘spiritual son,’ writer James Baldwin, who credits his beloved mentor with teaching him how to live, learn, and see. This genial soul, frequently suicidal, was plagued by poverty and schizophrenic voices. Art became his lifeline, and he filled hundreds of bright canvases with joy and hope. Writer Henry Miller called them ‘canticles to the sun.’ Delaney’s journey out of darkness, ‘the misery,’ he called it, ‘of which the jewel of life is formed,’ is a splendid testament to the courage and resilience of a gifted man who found in the mystical marriage of color and shape the healing grace of love.

Art, light, and friendship tell the story of celebrated African-American painter Beauford Delaney, who left the segregated South for the heady freedom of the Harlem Renaissance and Bohemian Paris. Famous singers, actors, writers, and artists adored him, Foremost among them his ‘spiritual son,’ writer James Baldwin, who credits his beloved mentor with teaching him how to live, learn, and see. This genial soul, frequently suicidal, was plagued by poverty and schizophrenic voices. Art became his lifeline, and he filled hundreds of bright canvases with joy and hope. Writer Henry Miller called them ‘canticles to the sun.’ Delaney’s journey out of darkness, ‘the misery,’ he called it, ‘of which the jewel of life is formed,’ is a splendid testament to the courage and resilience of a gifted man who found in the mystical marriage of color and shape the healing grace of love.
