Sofya Gulyak's recital programs are frequently reviewed in superlatives, and her concerto appearances with major orchestras are noted in glowing terms by the world's music press. Sofya Gulyak is currently a professor of piano at the Royal College of Music in London. Her UT debut will feature works by Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Rachmaninov, and Prokofiev. Sandra G. The Maryville College Concert Choir, directed by Stacey Wilner, will perform selections from its upcoming Scotland tour in May 2020. This concert will serve as a fundraiser for the choir tour.

Abbie Conant is former Principal Trombone of the Munich Philharmonic and Professor of Trombone at the Staatliche Hochschule fuer Musik in Trossingen, Germany. Her experiences with egregious sexism in the Munich Philharmonic inspired Malcom Gladwell's book Blink and comprise its final chapter. Her recital performance at UT is a fitting marker of Women's History Month and is free and open to the public.

The AA5 spring series begins with the premier performance of the 5th annual week-end long Women in Jazz Jam Festival, coordinated by Kelle Jolly. The Women in Jazz Jam Festival Band is a marvelous ensemble lead by women musicians who perform with the love of jazz in their hearts and the joy of life on their faces. Featured in the group are some of Knoxville’s local favorites as well as some rising stars. Their performance will include music written by and/or made famous by women performers, as well as some original music. Get ready to join the band on the dance floor or just “Sing Something” with the Women in Jazz Jam Festival Band! In celebration of 250 years since Beethoven's birth in 1770, pianist David Brunell will present a concert exploring three of Beethoven's greatest piano sonatas, including one from each of his three musical periods: the Pathétique, Op. 13, the Waldstein, Op. 53, and his penultimate sonata, the great Op. 110. Assisted by a PowerPoint presentation, Brunell will not only perform, but will also examine how each sonata communicates so powerfully and richly exemplifies Beethoven's continually evolving and compelling style.

Pianist Tianxu An, from Beijing, China, is a sought-after young pianist in China, Russia and the United States. Highlights of his 2019–20 season include performances with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev in St.Petersburg, and with the China Philharmonic Orchestra under Xia Xiaotang as part of the International Mariinsky Far East Festival, solo recitals at the Mariinsky Theatre and Shanghai Grand Theater, and a concert with the China NCPA Orchestra under Jia Lü at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, among many others.

The first of four programs celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, this concert features Beethoven’s rhythmically pulsating Symphony No. 7, which Beethoven considered one of his best and Richard Wagner dubbed “The Apotheosis of the Dance.” Israeli-born composer Avner Dorman’s percussion concerto “Spices, Perfumes, Toxins!” is a multicultural tapestry of 21st century rhythms utilizing over 20 instruments, performed by members of Knoxville’s own Nief-Norf. Nief-Norf is a multi-tiered contemporary music ensemble devoted to the performance, scholarship, and commissioning of adventurous musical works. With percussionists at its nucleus, the ensemble seeks opportunities to challenge and expand their ideas about what contemporary classical music is and can be in the 21st Century. Founders Andrew Bliss and Kerry O’Brien took the ensemble’s name from a descriptor of strange sounds: some say “bleep-blop,” they prefer “nief-norf.” A program with this much musical fire would not be complete without Beethoven’s Overture to Prometheus, the mythological hero who gave fire to humankind.

Winners of the Beverly Hills National Auditions, YuEun Kim and Ines Thomé met in 2013 when they both had just moved to the U.S., YuEun from Korea and Ines from Germany. Ms. Kim, a violinist, has won top prizes at the Korean Times Music Competition, Kumho Art Hall Recital Series Competition, Sungjung Competition, Music Education News Concours, and the Seoul High Schools Chamber Music Competition. Ines Thomé, a multi-instrumentalist in many different styles, plays electric guitar, lute, theorbo, baroque guitar, banjo, and mandolin.

Dallas String Quartet is where Bach meets Bon Jovi. Dallas String Quartet- DSQ Electric is an international music sensation. Their music is a fusion of classical and contemporary music on both traditional and electric strings. As a result, with the 2016 release of their fourth album “DSQ”, they continue to expand their passionate following on Pandora, Spotify, and Sirius XM radio. Additionally, DSQ performs as a quartet with the full accompaniment of drums and guitar.

7:30 p.m. ORCMA (LINK) Coffee Concert: Emi Kagawa plays Frederico Mompou and Fazil Say
A winner of numerous national and international competitions, Ms. Kagawa has performed at the Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the Trinity Church concert series, Steinway Hall, and the Symphony Space. She is a past winner of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition at Juilliard. Ms. Kagawa was also awarded first prize at the Nancy Clark International Piano Competition, second prize at the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition, and third prize at both the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition and the Corpus Christi International Piano Competition. She was featured on the McGraw-Hill Companies’ Young Artists Showcase series (broadcast on the New York Times’ classical music station WQXR), and has also performed on WITF (PBS member station for central Pennsylvania).
